1975 74 Tam Daw's Horn. Painted wooden horn with inscription:
"Notice, any lady or gentleman pleased to give a piece
of money will be thankfully received." Cord with ribbons
attached (Length 60cm; diam 20cm)
Tam Daw, probably son of Katie Daw, bell-ringer, lived
with
his sister in Mill Street. A well-known character, he
used
to play his horn on the home-coming of newly-married
couples, and on Market days like Joolie Fair, to earn a
few
coppers. The apprentice painters and draper boys kept it
well painted and decorated with bright ribbons.
He was possibly the father of "Dod Doo" (George Dow was
his
"Sunday" name) who is still remembered today. He, too,
was
the Bell Ringer and Town Crier for Kinross Town Council.
For example, he often warned that the water supply would
be
cut off for some hours while the pipes were cleaned.
